  • Yes. Reference and background checks are part of the process and are usually conducted prior to hire. A contingent offer of employment may be made that is subject to a satisfactory background check before beginning work for the City of Oak Harbor.

  • The City of Oak Harbor jobs are posted on the City's job module and also on the Government Jobs website where candidates are able to create a free, secure applicant account, apply for jobs online and view the screening status of their applications.

  • You can check the screening status in your applicant portal. Those selected to interview will be notified of the date, time, and location of the interview and if any testing will take place. Those not selected to interview can see their status in their applicant portal and/or may be notified by email. We suggest you check your spam email as sometimes our emails go to spam.

  • Once a job posting has closed, the job announcement will be removed from the website but you will be able to log in to view your status through your applicant portal. We will contact applicants as we proceed through the process. If you have not received a phone call, e-mail, or letter, then the process is still in the review stage. Due to the large volume of applications the City receives, the review process may take longer than usual. Every effort is made to notify applicants selected for an interview as early as possible. 

    Human Resources, department designee and/or panel will review all applications for the position after the closing date. Each application is considered.

It is important that you review each job announcement carefully to see that you meet the minimum qualifications before completing the online application.

  • Fire and Police employment opportunities are advertised on the Government Jobs website and various online job sites. Testing is required for entry-level police and fire, please visit the National Testing Network website for fire and Public Safety Testing website for police for details. This website is updated regularly for current job openings. Lateral police officers can contact our Civil Service Secretary to be put on a interest list if there is not a current opening.
