FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fatal Apartment Fire Under Investigation in Oak Harbor

Oak Harbor, WA — April15, 2025 - In the early hours of Tuesday morning, April 15, 2025, at approximately 12:47 a.m., crews from the Oak Harbor Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 830 NW Rigging Street. Multiple 911 callers reported heavy flames visible from an apartment complex.
While en route, responding units were updated that flames were coming through the roof of the structure. Oak Harbor Fire Department personnel arrived on scene within six minutes of dispatch. Mutual aid units from North Whidbey Fire and NAS Whidbey Island Federal Fire also responded, with all units on scene within 11 minutes.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered significant fire involvement in a second-story apartment. Crews acted swiftly to conduct searches and evacuate the remaining three units in the building. Due to the intensity of the fire in the originating apartment, an initial search was not possible.
After the fire was brought under control, crews conducted a thorough search of the affected apartment, where they discovered one adult victim deceased.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by fire and law enforcement officials. No firefighter injuries were reported, and all evacuated residents from adjacent units are safe.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim,” said Oak Harbor Fire Chief Travis Anderson. “We are grateful to our partner agencies for their quick response and assistance on scene.”
