March 12, 2025 - Oak Harbor, WA – The Oak Harbor Fire Department celebrated staff this week at its annual awards ceremony, recognizing individuals who have gone above and beyond in their service to the community. The ceremony highlighted the hard work and sacrifices of firefighters. The goal was to recognize those who demonstrated leadership, professionalism, and selflessness.

Oak Harbor Fire Chief Anderson opened the event by recognizing the importance of the department’s Paid on Call (POC) firefighters, who have been the backbone of the department since its inception. “Today, we gather to recognize and honor a group of individuals who embody the very foundation of the fire service, our Paid on Call firefighters. This profession was built on the backs of volunteers, and it takes a special kind of person to dedicate their time, energy, and safety for the sake of others,” he said. Although the POC program is transitioning out, the Chief assured those honored that their contributions would never be forgotten. “Your sacrifices have made a lasting impact. You will always be part of our fire service family.”

The ceremony also highlighted Firefighter and Officer of the Year awards. This year, Firefighter Jake Tumblin was named the Firefighter of the Year for his commitment and leadership since joining the department in 2020.

The Fire Chief’s Exemplary Service Award was presented to Deputy Fire Chief Mike Buxton, a respected leader who has dedicated over three decades to the department. Chief praised Buxton for his unwavering commitment and his impact on the department’s growth. “His leadership has guided this department through change with a steady hand and an unwavering commitment to professionalism,” Chief said.

Mayor Pro Tempore Hizon, was unable to attend in person, but sent her heartfelt thanks through the Chief. In her message, she acknowledged the sacrifices of the department’s members and the challenges of transitioning away from the POC program. “The Oak Harbor Fire Department is universally respected and appreciated in our community,” she said. “To say ‘thank you’ is not enough. There are no words that could ever adequately express the City’s gratitude for your service.”
