[ARCHIVED] Mayor's Comments to Whidbey News Time Article

I want to assure the community that I take city codes and compliance very seriously. I am fully committed to following the rules and understand the concerns raised regarding the height of my fence. Recently, I replaced an old fence that had been in place for over 15 years. Upon receiving a notice the first week of November, I immediately worked with my contractor and the City’s Development Services team to address the issue in accordance with the necessary steps.

The Development Services team personally assessed the fence on November 13th and informed me of adjustments that needed to be made. I then contacted my contractor to discuss this. On November 26th, I informed Development Services that my contractor will make necessary adjustments in Spring 2025, due to weather.  My contractor reached out to the City prior to building the fence and noted that no permitting was necessary. This same contractor has also built fences of the same height within City limits.

It’s important to note that many fences in the City limits, exceed the 6-foot height limit. As a result, the City is currently evaluating potential changes to ordinances and codes, recognizing that numerous existing fences are not in compliance. Development Services Director, David Kuhl states that his team is always working with residents to comply with city codes. “We will work with residents, who are willing to work with us directly.”

I also want to thank Mr. McKenzie for addressing his concerns directly during the City Council meeting on November 19th, which serves as an important reminder for residents to have the opportunity to voice their concerns, whether in person or online, and I fully support this transparent process. Public comment is important, and I encourage others to engage with the council in this manner.

Regarding McKenzie’s comments about my interactions with his wife, I want to emphasize that I have the utmost respect for all members of this community. My goal has always been to serve this city with integrity, and I will continue to do so.
